“Pennywise
always sound the same,” say people who haven’t listened to too much Pennywise.
When long-term vocalist Jim Lindberg quit and was replaced by Ignite’s Zoli Teglas, for instance, they sounded nothing like Pennywise, but more like Ignite 2.0. Oddly Jim formed The Black Pacific, a band that sounded exactly like Pennywise.

Now Jim has
returned and the band have released an album of previously unreleased material,
most of which is re-recorded. This being old material, it sounds just like
Pennywise. That’s not a bad thing as at least they still play with the anger
and energy that many of their contemparies can’t be bothered with anymore.
While
Yesterdays is a legitimate studio release, it’s a lazy one. Many fans may feel
short-changed by the lack of new material. Personally I could just forget they
ever released anything else and just listen to their Straight Ahead album on
repeat.
Single/leaked
teaser song Violence Never ending is an obvious highlight, but She’s A Winner
is probably the album’s best track, with its catching-you-off-guard slow start.
Listen to it
and then wait for a proper album of new stuff, even though there’s no indication
that one is forthcoming.
